In business, no one hesitates to ask the fundamental question: What’s the return on investment? Every krona, dollar, or euro is expected to perform—to deliver impact, generate value, and justify its existence.
But in the world of humanitarian aid, we’ve allowed a different logic to reign—one grounded more in goodwill than in measurable results. Donors are often moved by emotion, inspired by stories, and reassured by vague terms like “helping communities” or “improving access.” But how do we know what actually works?
At 1 for Ukraine, we believe this has to change.
If we want to build resilient healthcare systems in fragile environments—especially in war zones like Ukraine—we need to raise the bar. That means bringing the same level of accountability and performance metrics we demand from every other investment into the world of humanitarian response.
So we asked ourselves a radical question:
What is the actual cost of saving a life?
And then we built a system to answer it.
The numbers don’t lie
Since 2023, we’ve delivered life-saving medical equipment to hospitals in some of Ukraine’s hardest-hit regions. With a carefully targeted pilot project worth €50,000, we equipped a series of frontline medical units with essential surgical technology.
The result?
❤️ Over 600 lives saved during first year of use.
📊 ROI: ~€83per life.
That figure assumes only one year of equipment usage. But the machines we deliver—like the BOWA Lotus 4 or Karl Storz endoscopic units—have a conservative life expectancy of 10 years. When you factor that in?
➡️ €8.33 per saved life.
This is radical efficiency. Not because we cut corners—but because we cut through the noise. We focus on high-impact hospitals. We work directly with Ukrainian surgeons and hospital directors. And we use tools—like blockchain-backed traceability and real-time reporting—that allow donors to follow their impact all the way to the operating table.
Why this matters — now more than ever
Ukraine’s hospitals aren’t just underfunded. They are under siege. Bombed. Underequipped. Overwhelmed.
Doctors operate with failing infrastructure. Anesthesiologists work without proper monitoring. Neonatal units use outdated ventilators. And still, these professionals show up every day—to save lives with what little they have.
We believe that every Euro must work harder.
And we believe the only way to build trust at scale—in a time of donor fatigue and geopolitical fatigue—is through radical transparency.
That’s why we built 1 for Ukraine as both a humanitarian initiative and a performance-based model. We are not another charity. We are a blueprint for return-driven aid—with full traceability, rigorous selection processes, and clear metrics for success.
What’s next — and who we’re looking for
To scale this model, we don’t need more bureaucracy. We need partners who think like investors but care like humanitarians.
We’re looking for:
- 💼 Strategic donors who ask smart questions.
- 🧠 Institutions and foundations that want measurable outcomes.
- 🤝 Philanthropists who understand that impact isn’t just a feeling—it’s a formula.
If you’re one of them—or know someone who is—reach out. Because this isn’t just about helping Ukraine.
This is about proving that humanitarian aid can be precise, effective, and transparent. That it can be more than a moral gesture—it can be a replicable model.
This is impact investing in its most literal form: investing in human life.
Support the model. Save lives. Track your impact.
We’ve proven the concept. Now it’s time to scale.
