A Breakthrough at Zaitsev: Bloodless Surgery in a War Zone
In a quiet operating room in Kharkiv, something remarkable just happened.
A patient was rolled in for liver surgery – a high-risk procedure, usually marked by heavy bleeding. But this time, there was none. No chaos. No transfusions. Just calm, controlled precision.
The difference? A new surgical tool: the BOWA Lotus 4.
A New Standard in the Middle of a War
Zaitsev Institute of General and Emergency Surgery is one of Ukraine’s most important trauma hospitals. With daily challenges from mass casualty events such as injuries from explosions (grenades, drones, missiles etc) and resource shortages, any upgrade can make a difference.
This one might change everything.
The BOWA Lotus 4 is a highly advanced surgical unit that allows doctors to cut and seal tissue at the same time – drastically reducing bleeding. It’s already being used in top hospitals in Germany. Now, it’s working in a war zone.
“It feels like we’ve gone from machete to laser,” the lead surgeon told us after the first procedure.
Why It Matters
- In the hands of skilled surgeons, the Lotus 4 means shorter surgeries, fewer complications, and less need for blood – a scarce resource in wartime.
- It’s especially valuable in liver and thyroid surgeries, where blood loss is often the biggest threat, but not during war – any internal bleeding can simply be treated using the BOWA.
- The machine is built to last over 10 years and can be used in more than 14600 operations.
Cost per surgery? Less than €2.
Impact per patient? Life-saving.

We Know It Works. So Let’s Do It Again.
This isn’t just a donation. It’s a working model.
We identify real needs, deliver real equipment, and follow up with real data. When something works – we don’t stop.
We’re now raising funds to deliver a second BOWA unit to the Military Hospital in Kharkiv. We already have more than half of the budget secured.
Help us close the gap.
Help us deliver surgical precision where it’s needed most.
This is what 1 for Ukraine is about:
Smart systems. Real solutions.
And stories from the ground that remind us what’s at stake – and what’s still possible.
